We study the co-location of jobs and residents within U.S. cities and its evolution between 1990 and 2020. For 285 out of 381 CBSAs and almost all large MSAs, jobs and residents have become more co-localized. This trend is associated with a decrease in the size of establishments and a homogenization in the average size of establishments across locations within cities. We develop and estimate a quantitative urban model for Chicago to interpret these facts. A structural accounting exercise shows that the increasing co-location of jobs and residents has been driven by changes in productive and residential amenities. The dispersion in the comparative advantage of locations for production relative to residence has shrunk over time, reflecting a leveling of the playing field for production within the city, and thereby increasing the prevalence of mixed-use locations. Our results point to the increasing accessibility to broadband internet as one key driver of the leveling of the playing field and the changes in the intra-urban location patters of production.

主讲人介绍：

Kristian Behrens is Full Professor of Economics at the Université du Québec à Montréal (ESG-UQAM), Canada. He is also affiliated with the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR). The main focus of his research is on regional economics (spatial distribution of economic activity, changes in spatial structures), urban economics (spatial sorting, agglomeration economies), and international trade (impacts of trade integration, trade frictions). He earned his PhD in Economics at Université de Bourgogne, France, and has been a post-doc and Marie Curie Fellow of the European Union at the Center for Operations Research and Econometrics (CORE), Belgium. He was holder of the Canada Research Chair in Regional Impacts of Globalization from 2009-2019.
