摘要:
Understanding which firms discriminate is of great public and academic interest. We use data from a large-scale correspondence experiment to grade the biases against Black names among a collection of large U.S. employers. A novel Empirical Bayes ranking scheme is developed that trades off the informativeness of the assigned grades against the expected frequency of ranking errors. A four grade ranking is found to explain more than one third of the variation in proportional racial contact gaps across firms. Firms awarded the bottom grade exhibit biases against Black names averaging roughly 20%, while those awarded the highest grade exhibit negligible bias. The chances that a randomly selected pair of firms in our analysis sample is misranked by our grading procedure is estimated to be roughly 5%, suggesting the ordinal information conveyed by the grades is highly reliable.
