Abstract:

This study investigates how the governance policy of disintermediation, i.e., restricting communication channels through which complementors can persuade buyers to circumvent the platform and transact directly, would affect complementor innovation on online platforms. We leverage on the governance policy initiated by Amazon.com, the largest online shopping platform worldwide, and examine how complementors respond to adjust their innovation strategies in terms of new product development and launch on Amazon. Based on a theoretical model and a matching with Difference-in-Differences (DID) empirical approach, we find that the complementors who are affected by the disintermediation governance policy significantly decrease innovation compared to the matched complementors who are less affected by the policy change. Such a decrease in innovation is greater for complementors with lower ranking on the platform or for those who did not multihome on other major online e-commerce platforms. Our study provides implications on platform’s governance policies against disintermediation and guidelines to direct complementor innovation strategies on the platform.
