Abstract:

Since Adner (2017), efforts to reconcile the fragmented ecosystem literature have been abounding. We argue that the reconciliation cannot be effective without the research paradigm of each ecosystem stream being clarified and the transition zone between these paradigms being identified. In view of this, we start with identifying a self-inconsistency that has impeded the paradigmatic and theoretical maturity of ecosystem orchestration literature. To solve it, we recommend affiliation with a focal firm, instead of joint value creation (or alike elements), as the boundary concept of ecosystems in orchestration research. Building on this revision and drawing on social science literature, we conclude structural functionalism and radical structuralism as two underlying ecosystem paradigms and reconcile them with realism ontology. Our model allows theorists to examine different (innovation-specific and firm-specific) ecosystem entities as mutually conditioned structures that operate in different statuses (being transformed or reproduced) and periods (as conditions or outcomes) without paradox. This paper undergirds the organic solidarity of ecosystem scholarship in management by proposing an inclusive ontology (vs an inclusive definition). We also extend ecosystem theorizing from innovation-specific ecosystems to an ecosystem hierarchy, highlighting the potential synergy between ecosystem literature and corporate strategy literature. Adner (2017) 以来,调和支离破碎的生态系统文献的努力比比皆是。我们认为,如果没有明确每个生态文献流的研究范式并确定这些范式之间的过渡区,调和则不可能有效。鉴于此,我们首先识别了阻碍生态编排文献的范式和理论成熟的内在不一致性。为了解决该问题,我们建议以焦点公司的附属性,而非价值共创(或类似元素)作为编排文献中所使用的生态概念的边界。在此修订基础上并借鉴社会科学文献,我们总结了结构功能主义和激进结构主义两个生态研究范式,并引入批判实在本体论加以调和。我们的模型允许理论家毫不违和地将不同的生态实体 (创新生态和公司生态) 视为在不同状态(被转型或复制)和时期(作为条件或结果)下运行的互为条件的结构。本文把生态学术的有机整体性建立在包容性本体而非包容性定义之上。我们还将生态理论从创新生态单核扩展到创新生态-公司生态双核,强调生态文献和公司战略文献间的协同潜力。

Biography:

北京大学国家发展研究院管理学助理教授,剑桥大学博士。在攻读博士学位前,在国内高科技行业有近十年工作经验,在多家公司历任咨询顾问、战略经理、战略部总经理、CEO战略助理等职务。其行业专长包括对公司战略职能的端到端理解和对数字化浪潮持续而深入的跟踪和洞察。其学术专长是数字化背景下由商业生态演进和商业模式创新驱动的企业持续成长。他是2020年全球开放式创新大会最佳论文奖得主,也是中国移动研究院战略研究所及其他公司的外聘顾问。
