Abstract

This paper examines how different types of vertical political ties (strong tie and weak tie) affect the growth behavior of the Chinese subnational leaders. It highlights that vertical political ties not only can be resources for leaders, but also will have an impact on leaders' growth behavior. With a city-leader pair data collected from 276 cities in China for the period 2000-2010, it also provides an empirical test for the conclusions.
