题目:Income Inequality as a Social Determinant of Opioid Use Disorder

Abstract: In 2015, there are 251.3 opioid use related inpatient hospitalizations per 100,000 population in the US. Over 33,000 Americans lost their lives due to overdoses from opioids in the same year. We explore the association between income inequality and opioid use disorder as a test of the income inequality hypothesis (IIH) in the social epidemiology literature. We choose the income share of top 1% as the indicator of income inequality. Individual discharge-level data from the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) were used. We also construct a unbalanced panel (50 states and D.C. over nine years, N="242)" and regress the rates of opioid-related inpatient admission and emergency room on top 1% income share and confounding variables include state-level average income, and the variables. We control for year and state fixed effects. We found a 1% change in the income share of top 1% earners is associated with an additional 1.5 OUD-related hospital inpatient admission among 100,000 persons (p < 0.001).  State-level analyses found that an increase of 1% in income inequality is associated with an additional 3 OUD-related inpatient admissions (p="0.059)" among 100,000 persons.  Both individual-level and state-level analysis yield results on the same scale thus confirm the association between income inequality and OUD-related outcomes. We conclude that social policies to reduce income inequality may have an additional benefit of reducing OUD related health outcomes.

主题:Does Health Insurance Mitigate Imbalanced Sex Ratio at Birth?

摘要:During the last two decades, China has the most imbalanced sex ratio at birth (SRB) around the world. This paper explores the impact of health insurance on SRB for population, focusing on the heterogeneity between urban and rural areas. We construct a theoretical model to investigate potential mechanisms of the impact, and then examine the impacts empirically using provincial panel data. The results show that health insurance significantly influences the SRB of the second child, comparing with the first child. It also shows that, holding all other things equal, increase of insurance coverage results in more birth on males in urban regions, while the results in rural is the opposite, that more birth on females are correlated with insurance expansion.主讲人2介绍:
