Work capacity of older adults in China

摘要：China is one of the fastest ageing countries in the world. One of challenges of population ageing is the growing fiscal burden due to increasing expenditure on social security programs. To deal with this issue, some countries have extended official retirement age. But for this policy to be effective, one important concern is the health of older population. These are few studies have looked at work capacity and health in China. In this paper, we examine work capacity and health in older Chinese population. To do this, we use China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) and Cutler, Meara and Richards-Shubik method. This paper also discusses our results in light of results of other countries in the Health and Retirement Survey family that have done very similar analyses. Our results suggest that there is large unused work capacity in China, especially in urban areas and especially for women. While in rural areas, there is relatively small additional work capacity. This might be due to the distinct pattern of retirement and social security programs between urban and rural China.
报告人简介：后博，北京大学国家发展研究院国际引进交流博士后。研究兴趣包括应用微观经济学和公共卫生领域。到国发院之前，他分别在英国布里斯托和曼彻斯特大学获得经济学本科，经济学研究生以及社会统计学博士学位。
