Postnatal Little Emperors or Wired That Way? Multigenerational Transmission of Health under Chinese Family Planning
Abstract：
This paper investigates transmission of health across three generations in China and the impact on it of the Quantity-Quality (Q-Q) trade-off under Chinese family planning. We measure health in multidimensions including anthropometrics, health-related perception and behaviors, psychology and personality traits. The endogenous family size is instrumented by household eligibility to have more children, the implementation of family planning policy measured by the official fines on unsanctioned birth, and the intensity of implementation proxied by the ratio of actual over official fines. We find intergenerational transmission in height, BMI, fertility intention, smoking, drinking alcohol, leisure-time physical exercises, competitive tendencies, social skills, prosocialness, trust and trustworthiness. The Q-Q trade-off only exists in anthropometrics and rural females’ trust and urban females’ trustworthiness. A larger sibling size strengthens intergenerational transmission of health-related behaviors, while weakens intergenerational transmission of anthropometrics, depression, trust, trustworthiness and prosocialness, and multigenerational impact of drinking behavior. There is not necessarily a curse of only children when taking into account multigenerational association. Mechanisms are discussed.
