The Effect of Retirement on Health: A comparison Study between China and the US

Abstract:

Increasing retirement age has been irresistible both in China and the US as a result of the demographic change. Health effects of retirement sometimes are neglected in the political debate. Retirement can lead to social isolation and a diminished sense of purpose, which may worsen health. On the other hand, retirement may increases leisure, which reduces physical and mental stress, improving health. The US and China are different in retirement policy and many other aspects. A comparison study will add more understandings on the retirement effects on health under different social economic situation. We use Health and Retirement Study (HRS) data for the US study and China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) data for Chinese study. Social security eligible age in both countries provides discontinuity of probability of retirement, which allow us to use Fuzzy Regression Discontinuity Design (RDD) for identification. Several indicators of health are employed, including self-reported health, depression and cognition. Our main findings are: (1) Generally speaking, retirement will cause a declining of cognition in the US, while an increasing of cognition in China. (2) In the US, for people with low education (high school and below), retirement will increase their self-reported health significantly, while for people with high education (some college and above), retirement will increase the score of depression and decrease cognition. (3) Nearly 80 percent sample in Chinese study are high school and below. Results for low education people in the US is comparable to results for China, which implies that retirement improves health of low-educated people. (4) Results from the US have some implications on Chines policy, i.e. with more high-educated people in labor market, changing retirement policy to postpone retirement age is a health-improving policy.
