Abstract

How do multinational enterprises (MNEs) respond to major disasters? Bounded by the dual institutional logic of home and host countries, MNEs may either imitate peers from the home country or peers from the host industry as they make decisions. We adopt a dynamic perspective and propose a staged model to understand the process of a firm’s response to a disaster in initial and subsequent actions. Drawing on institutional theory and learning theory, we hypothesize that MNEs will imitate peers from the home country in the initial response and imitate peers in the host industry in the subsequent response. Furthermore, we argue that firm attributes such as liability of foreignness and reputation reinforce or mitigate such mimetic behavior. Empirical analyses of MNEs’ philanthropic donation following the 2008 Sichuan Earthquake in China lend support to our hypotheses.
