Product Line Pricing of Luxury Goods and Counterfeits

Abstract:

Luxury brands often offer a vertical product line of luxury goods. Given exorbitant prices of authentic luxury goods, less wealthy consumers may instead purchase cheap counterfeits. We show that a luxury brand may earn more profit when counterfeits are available with cheaper prices, higher quality, and greater resemblance to authentic products.

Yuetao Gao is an Associate Professor of Marketing in Xiamen University. His research areas include counterfeit and pirated products. His research papers have appeared in Journal of Marketing Research, Marketing Science, Management Science, and Production and Operations Management.
