题目:《The Motherhood Penalty and Low Fertility in China:

A Pseudo-Event Study》

摘要:

Using census data from 2000 to 2015 and a pseudo-event study design, this paper estimates the magnitude, distribution, and trend of the motherhood penalty in China, while examining its relationship with the country’s declining fertility rates. The findings reveal that one-third of working women leave the labor market in the year they give birth, with the penalty persisting for over eight years. The magnitude of the penalty increased significantly during the study period across most provinces, and regions with larger increases in the penalty experienced sharper declines in fertility rates. A mover-based design analysis shows that when women migrate to provinces with higher motherhood penalties, their fertility rates drop significantly. This study contributes to the literature by applying a novel pseudo-event study approach to cross-sectional data, offering new insights into the interaction between labor market constraints and fertility decisions in a rapidly evolving socio-economic context.

题目:《The Lasting Scars of War: Economic, Health, and Intergenerational Effects of the Second Sino-Japanese War》

摘要:

This paper examines the long-term and intergenerational effects of early-life exposure to the Second Sino-Japanese War (1931–1945) on human capital in China. Using Chinese census data and longitudinal surveys (CHARLS and CFPS), we find that individuals exposed to the war from conception to age seven suffer persistent reductions in educational attainment, employment prospects, and health. Each month of exposure decreases schooling by 0.04 years and lowers the likelihood of white-collar employment. In later life, these individuals experience poorer health, lower cognitive function, and reduced income. Additionally, paternal exposure to the war during early childhood adversely affects the educational and economic outcomes of the next generation. These findings highlight the lasting consequences of early-life shocks and underscore the importance of historical conflict in shaping long-term socio-economic trajectories.

题目:《Gender, Labor Supply and Earnings in Gig Economy: Evidence from Chinese Online Delivery Riders》

摘要:

The flexible nature of work in the gig economy is widely regarded as empowering women by granting greater autonomy. However, using administrative and survey data from a leading delivery platform in China, we identify a persistent gender earnings gap of approximately 27.4% among riders. This disparity can be fully explained by three factors: work intensity (accounting for 57% of the gap), experience, and job scheme. To investigate the underlying causes of work intensity differences, we employ a discrete stopping model to analyze labor supply patterns. The results reveal that female riders demonstrate significantly less responsiveness to predictable income fluctuations such as peak hours premiums and weather-based surge pricing compared to their male counterparts, while both genders show similar reactions to unpredictable income variations. Our findings suggest that the gender earnings gap in gig work predominantly stems from women’s rational decisions to forgo high-income opportunities due to preference-based choices or time constraints linked to household responsibilities. The study challenges assumptions about gig work’s gender equality benefits, emphasizing how structural factors perpetuate disparities even in flexible labor markets.
