摘要:

This talk traces the evolution of the study of gender, focusing on how academic thinkingon this topic has evolved, and how past insights inform current perspectives on addressing the remaining gender disparities in the labor market.

Current academic thinking emphasizes two fundamentally different explanations for the existence of gender gaps — essential differences in preferences/skills between men and women vs. gender differences in constraints. I discuss insights from research in both economics and social psychology on the relative importance of these explanations and the implications for economic efficiency. I then provide an in-depth review of recent literature emphasizing the role of children and family responsibilities as a major source of differential barriers to labor market success by gender, and discuss how this interplays with gender norms and discrimination.
