摘要:This study investigates the impact of digital green nudges on single-use cutlery consumption in China’s food delivery industry. Collaborating with Alibaba’s online food delivery platform Ele.me, we analyze detailed customer-level monthly consumption data from 2019 to 2020 and find that the introduction of two digital green nudges — changing the default to “No Cutlery” at checkout and rewarding consumers “green points” that can be used to plant trees under their name — increased the share of environmentally friendly orders by 651%. Females, middle-aged, elderly, and high-income people are especially sensitive to green nudges. The aggregate environmental benefits from the green nudges are economically significant: during the 27 calendar months of enforcement of the green nudges in the three Chinese cities (Shanghai, Beijing, and Tianjin), consumers avoided using more than 140 million sets of single-use cutlery, corresponding to reducing 1,420 tons of plastic waste and saving 177,000 trees. These findings suggest that digital green nudges and platform companies can be powerful partners in promoting individuals’ environmentally friendly behaviors.
