Abstract:
In this talk I will focus on research on business models and discuss issues related to the design of digital platform business models. Using data from the popular digital platform Airbnb in the touristic city of Barcelona, we analyze if it delivers its value proposition to guests, hosts, and the city. Evidence suggests that Airbnb in Barcelona closely resembles the existing hotel industry, reinforcing over-tourism and inequality, which explains the adverse reactions Airbnb has faced in Barcelona. The analysis uncovers the substantive, localized, and dynamic characteristics of the business model design process. Research on effective business model design is essential, with implications for academia, managers, and policymaking. Looking forward, there are exciting opportunities to deepen understanding of the processes of business model design and to better evaluate the societal impacts of business models. Additionally, I will present Long Range Planning, a premier strategy journal, and answer questions about the publishing process from the editor’s perspective.

Biography:
Yuliya Snihur is an Associate Professor of Strategy, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation at the Toulouse Business School, France. Yuliya teaches and studies strategy-formation processes in new ventures and the evolution of strategic management in existing firms based on the analysis of firms’ business models. To this end, she uses hand-collected interview data, fieldwork, and longitudinal datasets to build theory. Yuliya has published in such journals as Academy of Management Journal, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Journal of Business Venturing, Journal of Management, Journal of Management Studies, Long Range Planning, Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal, and Research Policy. She co-edited a Special Issue on business models and sustainability at the Journal of Cleaner Production and is working on a related special issue at Organization & Environment. She serves as Associate Editor at Long Range Planning and is member of editorial boards at Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal and Strategic Organization. Yuliya received her PhD in management from the IESE Business School (Barcelona, Spain), prior to which she worked in corporate finance.
