Abstract
The lecture traces the metamorphosis of capitalism through the evolution of Schumpeterian thought, arguing that each historical era requires new economic concepts. It begins by highlighting the dominance of neoclassical economics after World War II, whose equilibrium-focused models neglected innovation as a central driver of change. By the late 1970s, structural transformations and technological shifts exposed these limitations, prompting a revival of Joseph Schumpeter’s ideas, particularly “creative destruction.”
The first wave of neo-Schumpeterian economics re-centered innovation, entrepreneurship, and structural change, but remained incomplete because it underdeveloped theories of finance and the state. This led to Comprehensive Neo-Schumpeterian Economics (CNSE), which integrated three co-evolving pillars: industry, finance, and the public sector. CNSE better explained systemic crises such as the dot-com crash and the 2008 financial crisis.
However, the 21st century introduced existential risks - climate change, pandemics, artificial intelligence, and geopolitical instability—that exceed CNSE’s scope. The lecture therefore proposes “Post-Schumpeterian Economics,” which embeds innovation within planetary boundaries, global justice, power dynamics, and security concerns. This framework redefines development as transformation, emphasizing sustainability, inclusion, and co-evolutionary robustness to address capitalism’s emerging global challenges.
Introduction of Speaker
Horst Hanusch is a German economist best known for his contributions to Neo-Schumpeterian and innovation economics. He has played a central role in advancing evolutionary approaches to economic theory, particularly by extending Joseph A. Schumpeter’s concept of creative destruction into a broader institutional and policy-oriented framework. His work emphasizes the dynamic interplay between innovation, structural change, and long-term economic development.
Hanusch served from 1974-2010 as Full Professor of Economics at the University of Augsburg, 2007-2011 as Vice President of the UA, and since April 2010 he is Emeritus Professor at the UA, Institute of Economic Research.
From 1994-1997 he was President of the International Institute of Public Finance, now one of its Honorary Presidents; since 1986 co-founder (together with Wolfgang Stolper) and Secretary General of the International J. A. Schumpeter Society until 2022; since 1991 founder and co-editor of the Journal of Evolutionary Economics, currently its Founding Editor; since 2006 co-founder and until 2011 Secretary General of the Lisbon Civic Forum.
A key intellectual contribution of Hanusch is the development of Comprehensive Neo-Schumpeterian Economics (CNSE), which integrates the real, financial, and public sectors into a co-evolutionary framework. In this model, economic development emerges from the interaction of entrepreneurial innovation, financial support mechanisms, and an enabling public sector. His work highlights the importance of national innovation systems and institutional structures in shaping growth trajectories.
More recently, Hanusch has been associated with the concept of Post-Schumpeterian Economics (PSE), which seeks to reconcile innovation-driven growth with ecological sustainability. By integrating environmental constraints into Schumpeterian dynamics, this approach addresses the global challenge of transforming “brown” economies into “green” ones through targeted innovation policy and systemic institutional reform.
Throughout his career, Hanusch has combined theoretical rigor with policy relevance, contributing to international research networks and advisory bodies. His scholarship continues to influence debates on innovation, structural change, and sustainable economic development in the twenty-first century.
