题目:Technology Adoption, Factor Flows and Economic Development: Evidence from Rural China
摘要:In 2004, the Chinese government started the machinery subsidy policy and the amount of subsidy increased from less than 20 million in the beginning to over 1 billion yuan in 2013. Using the 2003-2014 household panel data from fixed point survey of 320 villages, we examine the impacts of the subsidies on machinery spending, land renting, labor migration, (productivity), and household income. Exploring the temporal and cross-sectional variations in provincial subsidy provision and ruggedness and size of the land, we show that the machinery subsidies increase the usage of farm machines, especially in the villages of large and plain lands. Correspondingly, the subsidies boost the land renting behaviors, increase the concentration of land usage, and increase the migration among the young rural people. Finally, we find that the subsidies significantly increase agriculture productivity and household income. Specially, a 10% increase in machinery subsidy increase income per capita by 0.15%.
